Gardening containers
Gardening containers can be made from many different material, plastic, ceramics, terra cotta, wood etc. Containers must be filled with growing medium made for containers. In most cases that will mean potting soil mix, whether commercial mix that you bought or one that you made by mixing different soil ingredients If just starting out it is much easier to purchase potting soil commercially available at your garden supply store. Do not use regular top soil as it does not hold moisture well and when dry will often get hard and is not good for the plant roots.
Most of the pots below, like the earthbox and the stackable pots have a watering reservoir built in that will help retain water so that you do not have to water nearly as often, and water and fertilizer that is applied to the plant is utilized much more efficiently. These “self watering” systems are great for the gardener who does not have time to check his plant water often. These boxes are also great for those who are in water restricted areas or just do not have time to water their plants daily.
It makes watering almost fool proof. Most of these system work by filling up a reservoir at the bottom and then wicking the water up to the plant as it is needed. These “self watering ” systems must have the reservoir filled from time to time. how often depends on the plants, soil and weather. You must use the proper soil in these systems also, in most cases that is potting soil. Regular top soil just will not wick the water well and does not hold the water well.
